New album by Dreamtale

The Finnish power metal band Dreamtale put out a new album this Spring

World Changed Forever is another impressive melodic power metal release that you should absolutely listen to

Heavy, catchy, well produced and well executed this release incorporates just a sprig of prog as well and like most Scandinavian metal it is neither bombastic nor cheesy but straight between the eyes. Go get it:

Suncrown

Suncrown is a truly international symphonic/epic metal band formed in 2011 by songwriter and keyboardist Oleg Biblyi (Ukraine) and vocalist Darren Crisp (USA). Then  guitarist Gustavo Bonfá (Brazil) and bassist Ederson Prado (Brazil) joined the group. In July 2011 Suncrown released their first video clip Follow Your Dream. In October Suncrown released a video clip in memory of Ronnie James Dio, Children of the Sea (Black Sabbath cover) with legendary drummer Vinny Appice (Dio, Black Sabbath and Heaven & Hell). Female singer Juliana Furlani (Brazil) and drummer Tim Zuidberg (Netherlands) then joined and in February 2012 another video clip, Believe, was recorded with 2 new members: guitarist Kevin Ellerby (USA) and flute player Uğur Kerem Cemiloğlu (Turkey). In June again a video was released: Eyes of the World, which showed the full group for the first time. In November 2012 the debut CD titled Follow Your Dream was released, and the second album You Are Not Alone is announced for a July release so stay tuned. Not only does this band master the difficulties of having members in four different continents, but also do they sound very skilled and very epic.

Eclipse Prophecy

The brainchild of David Mc Gregor (lead vocals, and guitars), Montreal, Canada based Eclipse Prophecy were formed in 2003, and went through a number of band member changes including keyboardist Frederik Dufresne, only to settle on their current line-up in 2010. Their new line-up that performed on “Days of Judgment” includes David Mc Gregor, brothers Martin Machado on lead guitar, Karlos Machado on bass guitar, and Landryx (Unexpect) on drums.

So far they have performed as support act for many reknown bands such as Epica, Pagan’s Mind, Stratovarius, Gamma Ray, Sabaton and more.
In 2011, they recorded a remake version of “The Bard’s Song – In The Forest”, with the power metal veterans Blind Guardian.

In late 2012, the band inked a deal with Maple Metal Records for the worldwide release of their first full length album “Days Of Judgement” released in 2013.

The music can be described a speed power metal with Iced-Earth-like vocals, heavy, fast and melodic. The drums batter like a machine with no variety, the guitars are fast and not too dominant, there are sprinklings of synths and piano, but mostly in the fore are vocals and the unrelenting double-kick.

Martin Machado – Lead Guitars
Karlos Machado – Bass Guitars
Landryx – Drums

Taberah – ‘The infamous Tasmanian Devils’

Taberah is a power metal band from Tasmania (Australia)
Jonathon Barwick and Tom Brockman created it in 2004. They state their influencs as coming from Iron Maiden + Black Sabbath, AC/DC + Thin Lizzy, Queen + The Darkness. All with a slightly modern and original twist.
Taberah quickly became a staple act in the Tasmanian live music scene. They recorded two demos, 2006 and 2007  and an EP containing a Queen cover song (Crazy Little Thing Called Love)  in 2009.

In early 2011 TABERAH were hand picked by Lemmy Kilmister himself to open for Motorhead on the Sydney leg of their 2011 Australian tour. Other milestones include sharing the stage all around Australia with high profile international and national acts such as: Paul Di’anno – (ex Iron Maiden) and Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens, LORD, Psycroptic, Black Majesty and more Australian acts.2011 saw the band record & release their debut album “The Light Of Which I Dream”. The album earned TABERAH some attention, they stat worldwide, but I’d say locally. 2012 saw them recording the follow up entitled “Necromancer” set for an August 2013 release.

Through one of their gigs Taberah came to the attention of Australian metal icon Stu Marshall (ex Dungeon, Death Dealer, Empires of Eden) and he was keen to help with the album and the band in general. This lead to Stu mastering  “Necromancer” and helping the band ink a deal with German promotion titan Rock N Growl. Stu is said to have stated that ‘Necromancer is one of the best Australian metal releases in the last 10 years’. Let’s see, until we can listen, here’s the debut

DGM – Momentum 2013

Momentum is my very first contact with the Italian progressive metallers DGM, shame on me…

For those who have never met them before like me, DGM is a band of long standing, founded in 1994, released eight studio albums,  one double live CD and one self produced demo EP. Listening to their latest I think they take a lot of their musical inspiration from Symphony X (yeah 🙂 ), indeed, there is one track featuring Russel Allen on vocals. On their webpage they state that the album ‘represents the full stylistic maturity of a band’ and I’d totally agree, though listening through earlier releases quickly I’d say their style is very consistent throughout.

The instrumentals, especially the guitars are very reminiscent of Symphony X, whereas the vocals could fit equally well in 80ies Van Halen or even Toto, they are very hard rock, very melodic with catchy lines.

A bit back histroy of the band that should be more widely known imo

Their second release Wings of Time was a favourite of many Italian metal magazines and earned them lots of fame in Japan too, getting them an exclusive interview on the Japanese BURN! mag.

Different Shapes, which was released in 2007 was awarded top album by both Rock Hard and Metal Hammer.

DGM played twice at the Gods of MetalFestival together with Heaven&Hell, Dream Theater, Symphony X, Dark Tranquility among others, Lagoa Burning Festival (2007), Prog-Power Europe (2007 and 2013) and supported Symphony X on their European tour, sharing the stage with Pagan’s Mind to.

Thy Majestie – power metal from Italy

Thy Majestie is a Power metal band from Palermo in Italy that formed in 1998.

Their 6th studio album, ShiHuangDi, released in 2012 was my first encounter with the band and I am still asking myself, why this band is not better known. Reading their Wiki page it seems like they missed out on some important opportunities, like touring with Kamelot in 2002: They were invited by Thomas Youngblood but couldn’t afford the travel expenses and had to fulfill recording duties (for Scarlet Records). Or signing with LIMB music, duties with Scarlet Records again.

The album is a concept album, like some of the earlier releases about Jeanne D’Ark for instance. ShiHuangDi refers to the first Chinese emperor, and this sets the lyrical concept for the album. A few musical references to Eastern music here are overpowered by the unique power metal style. Bands like very early Kamelot come to mind, but not when it comes to vocals that are more high pitched, maybe like Fabio Leone (who actually sings on one track here) or again, someone compared the vocal style to Sonata Arctica. The approach is symphonic and epic, but never cheesy, and slightly progressive. I especially like the drums, hard ‘n’ heavy, like they should be. Lots of keyboards and some nice string arrangements, well fitted and not overdone. This is more metal than Royal Hunt’s latest release (where guitars are too much in the background and keys too much in the front) but otherwise this reference works well too.  Jump down there to listen for yourself ….

I’ll surely dive into the back catalogue of this band. Hastings 1066, a concept album (guess about what) seems to have been one of the most celebrated releases in Italy and maybe even whole of Europe, and progressive elements were more marked on some albums I heard.

Their releases:

Perpetual Glory (self released, 1999)
The Lasting Power (2000)
1066 (demo, 2001)
Hastings 1066 ( 2002)
Jeanne d’Arc (2005)
Dawn (2008)

Astronomikon’s music is some of the top melodic power metal you can hear, awesome vocals, riffing and melodies that will stick. Just hit their homepage for a listen, it is worth it if you love melodic metal! As you can see also the artwork is a hit 🙂 Let’s see how these guys will go on from here.  I didn’t find any tourdates so far, let’s stay hopeful …

The current line up includes Socratis Leptos (guitars) and Stefan Dittrich (drums).
